From the letter: "Cambridge City Councillors, are keen to avoid extensive work on Plane trees in the city's Alexandra Gardens, and have called a public meeting to hear residents' views. The meeting will take place on Friday, 15 October at 7pm at St Luke's Church in Victoria Road." This event is RSVP, (by 14th October), details are in the document. Just a reminder that the above meeting will take place this Friday, 15 October at 7pm at St Luke's Church in Victoria Road. Please attend if you can. Alarmingly there is another case that has come to light concerning trees that are recommended for felling because they are blamed for subsidence problems this time in Robert Jennings Close. The trees in question are the subject of preservation orders! http://www.cambridge.gov.uk/democracy/Published/C00000181/M00000361/$$ADocPackPublic.pdf (big dowload, see page numbered 293 onwards). This is set to be decided at a Council planning meeting on Wednesday October 20th. Again, we are concerned that the council is accepting, too readily, the advice of structural engineering advisors working for the insurance companies, and is not mounting a strong enough defence of the trees, in this case protected ones. We think that Cllr Cantrill should delay any decision on these trees until the issue in Alexandra Gardens has been decided as they could set an unhelpful precedent. Please can you help? The CB1 Station Development outline planning permission has now been granted but the detailed plans for each block have to be approved. On Wednesday morning the Planning Committee will consider the replacement office block for Great Eastern House on the corner of Tenison Road and Station Road. Nobody will mourn the loss of the ugly 1960s Gt Eastern House but the trees which surround it are a delight. They include a semi-mature plane tree which is the subject of a tree preservation order. (see attached photograph) The new block is going to be a seven storey glass and steel building that will tower over the neighbourhood. The only redeeming feature would be a screen of mature trees, but these are to be cut down and replaced by six small flowering cherries and crab apples. The Council Officials seem completely compliant to the wishes of the Developer Brookgate, and have not raised objection to the loss of even the protected Plane tree. The matter will however be decided by the Committee. The Residents Association will plead for the trees at the meeting on Wednesday. Please do what you can to protest about the unnecessary loss of these mature trees by writing to the members of the planning committee, links below. Glisson Road / Tenison Road Area Residents Association: Chair - Barbara Bell 23 Glisson Road Vice Chair - Simon Szreter 18 Tenison Ave Secretary - Frank Gawthrop 30 Lyndewode Road Treasurer - Bronwen Loder 39 Glisson Road News from the Glisson Road Tenison Road Area Residents Association 18.10.10 Dear Resident, We have just 24 hours to save the Tension Road trees. See our website for more information on the threat to several large trees in Alexandra Gardens. It is important that as many people as possible attend to show the level of concern about the future of these city trees which are being threatened due to subsidence claims. Gavin will be showing us samples of apples from the varieties that we are growing in Trumpington - so we know what to expect in a couple of years! This will be a fascinating talk and a chance to learn more about local fruit. Tickets are ?2 at the door - the venue is the new Trumpington Pavilion on Foster Road/Byron Square. Talk starts at 7:30pm, doors open from 7pm. We will also be selling bottles of local apple juice. Other Apple Events are piling up: 14 October - We are giving a talk to Girton Garden Society from 7:30pm. Tickets available at the door. I hope to see you at one of these apple events soon! Message-ID: <20101014211442.FERT6000.aamtaout03-winn.ispmail.ntl.com@asus.soscambridge.org.uk> "Cambridge City Councillors, are keen to avoid extensive work on Plane trees in the city's Alexandra Gardens, and have called a public meeting to hear residents' views". On Friday 15th, Andy Davy and Councillor Rod Cantrill were interviewed on the BBC Radio Cambridgeshire breakfast show. In the evening, there was a public meeting which was very well attended. We gained the impression that the Council is now listening to residents and wants to find a solution that will (hopefully) avoid any threat to the trees. Unfortunately the Alexandra Gardens trees are not the only ones under this type of threat in the city. We have updated the web page with a link to the radio interview in case you missed it, and more information. http://www.soscambridge.org.uk/alexandra_gardens.html John Lawton SOS Chair --------------------------------------------------------- Save Our green Spaces http://www.soscambridge.org.uk --------------------------------------------------------- From chair at soscambridge.org.uk Mon Oct 18 21:58:36 2010 From: chair at soscambridge.org.uk (John Lawton) Date: Mon, 18 Oct 2010 21:58:36 +0100 Subject: [Announce] News from the Glisson Road Tenison Road Area Residents Association Message-ID: <20101018205819.FDHN20122.aamtaout01-winn.ispmail.ntl.com@asus.soscambridge.org.uk> We have just received this urgent message.
