It's important to be aware of this development as it could affect ancient woodlands in other parts of the country, as well as Oaken Wood. Why is this important? Oaken Wood is the biggest test for the protection of ancient woodland since the National Planning Policy Framework (NPPF) came into play. Will the Government's new planning reforms, published earlier this year, actually protect our most precious habitat? After months of preparation, we will spend 4 weeks presenting evidence and debating the arguments for and against the quarry extension to a Planning Inspector. He will then report back to the Secretary of State for Communities and Local Government, the Right Hon. Eric Pickles MP, in the New Year. They will use the evidence from the inquiry in the context of the National Planning Policy Framework to decide between them the fate of this cherished sweet chestnut coppice woodland. Despite Government arguing that the new National Planning Policy Framework gives sufficient protection to the environment, it still contains a loophole which states that planning applications should not bring about the loss of irreplaceable habitats 'unless the need for, and benefits of, the development in that location clearly outweigh the loss' *. The outcome of this inquiry is likely to define the level of protection given to ancient woods in all future planning decisions across England. If Oaken Wood is lost to the quarry extension a dangerous precedent could be set for mineral extraction proposals in ancient woodland. Keep up with the daily highs and lows at the inquiry by following our Woodland Matters blog: http://wtcampaigns.wordpress.com/ And you can share the news as it happens with friends and family. Look out for #OakenWood on Twitter to see what others are saying about the events as they unfold. It may not be just one wood that this decision could affect ? there is a strong chance that approval for this quarry may lead to the destruction of many more ancient woods in the near future. Please keep supporting our campaign. Speak to you soon, Nikki Head of Campaigning PS: You can still join other campaigners who donated to our fighting fund and helped to raise ?3,000 in a week.
