[Discuss] Jesus Green / Midsummer Common Footpaths

Cambridgeshire County Council are looking to carry out resurfacing 
works to footpaths on Jesus Green and Midsummer Common. The work will 
involve providing a new overlaid surface whilst maintaining the paths 
at their existing width.

On Jesus Green we will be resurfacing the towpath from The Lock 
Bridge to Thompsons Lane and the path along the brook from Park 
Parade to Victoria Avenue. This work will tie in with the City 
Council scheme for resurfacing and widening The Avenue from the Lock 
Bridge to Victoria Avenue. We will also attend to a couple of areas 
near The Lido where tree root heave is disturbing the surface of the path.

With regard to Midsummer Common we are hoping to resurface the 
majority of footpaths. This work will be carried out in a number of 
phases. The first phase will concentrate on the tow path from Walnut 
Tree Avenue to Victoria Avenue and also the footpaths from The Fort 
St George to Victoria Avenue. As work progresses we will monitor 
costs and then issue further details of other paths to be resurfaced.

The path from Cutter Ferry Bridge that runs diagonally across the 
common towards Four Lamps Roundabout has been subject to a bid for 
Section 106 funding. Once confirmed we will be looking into the 
possibility of widening this path. The main justification for this is 
that the use of the path has grown and it can no longer accommodate 
the number of cyclists / pedestrians without the potential for 
conflict. As a result grass areas either side of the path have been 
overrun leading to damage. More information will follow on this 
proposal as it progresses. To take this forward we will need 
Secretary of State approval for widening the path as it will take 
away 'common land'.

There are a number of other areas we are looking to improve as part 
of these schemes including; the area outside The Fort St George, the 
area near Cutter Ferry Bridge, the corner at rear of North Terrace 
where the path splits to Maids Causeway and Four Lamps and a section 
of path near Victoria Avenue which is being considered for widening 
under the Section 106 scheme.

During works the footpaths will be closed in sections with an 
alternative path provided in close proximity. This will take the form 
of rubber matting laid on the grass and will be suitable for all 
non-motorised users. We are looking to commence work mid-late August 
and when the work is programmed by our contractor I will let you 
know. Before work commences we will display advanced warning signs on 
the affected paths and will look to post information on websites and 
via social media.

We are aware of the interest you all have and would welcome a site 
visit to discuss works with any interested parties. Please feel free 
to pass this information to any other persons or organisations that 
we may have missed. I look forward to working with you all to deliver 
enhanced footpaths in these areas.
